5 Most Awaited Smartphones of 2011

2010 will be remembered as the year when Android got serious and when smartphones got off their pedestal and became more approachable to the regular consumer. Here we list the five smartphones that look like they might define and shape the market in 2011.

LG Star

It looks like 2011 will be the year when smartphone specs will break many barriers. The rumored LG Star (aka Optimus 2X) is one such smartphone with a rumored 1GHz dual core processor (either Nvidias Tegra 2 or the ARM Cortex A9) and a 4-inch capacitive display with a resolution of 480x800 and color output of 16M colors. While leaked info claims that the Optimus 2X will be launching with Android 2.2 (Froyo), we wont be surprised if it actually shows up with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Another thing that excites us about the 2X is its 8MP autofocus camera. Since LG phones have always impressed with their multimedia capabilities, its not hard to predict that the Optimus 2Xs camera will be very good. The LG is also supposed to have an HDMI port to output 720p videos and will most certainly support playback of XviD/DivX videos.

When its expected: While most sources say that it should be revealed by LG in January, a safer bet would be the first quarter of 2011.

Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone

This could just be the biggest game-changer of them all. While the iPhone has certainly given a huge impetus to quality mobile gaming, the rumored PlayStation phone from Sony Ericsson could be the device that completely erases the line between phones and handheld gaming devices. While rumors started coming out in August about the PlayStation phone, further information has trickled through gradually. However, whatever we have learnt so far is quite enough to make us seriously excited about this phone. Things like actual dedicated hardware gaming controls and 3.7-inch display to watch the action on sound great on paper. Add to that a 1GHz processor, Android 2.3 OS and a 5MP camera make the PlayStation phone look like a one stop device for all your mobile entertainment needs.

When its expected: Since the phone already seemed to be a tangible one back in August, we expect it to be revealed in the first quarter and most probably at Februarys Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

Nokia E7

The Nokia E7 was announced back in September and for once we have plenty of information on it. If you are Symbian fan and want an alternative to the Nokia N8 with a focus on productivity over multimedia, then you should look forward to the E7. That doesnt mean that the E7 skimps on multimedia features, in fact its specs sheet would put plenty of smartphones to shame. Specs such as a 4-inch AMOLED display, an 8MP camera (which is unfortunately fixed-focus like the C7) and HDMI out look really good. Add to that a huge four-row slide-out keyboard and Nokias traditionally excellent design and build quality and you have a contender in the E7 for one of the better smartphones to come out in 2011.

When its expected: Taking into consideration the time Nokia usually takes to launch a product after announcing it; the E7 should make its way into stores in January.

Apple iPhone 5

Apple has said absolutely nothing about the iPhone 5 but its virtually assured that there will be a new iPhone in 2011. Of course, that hasnt stopped rumors and leaks from surfacing and it looks like Apple will be making certain changes to the iPhone 4 but nothing drastically game changing. Leaked images of what is purported to be the iPhone 5 show a curved back like on the iPhones before the iPhone 4, with a metal bezel extending to the front. Also, the menu button will now be a touch sensitive one rather than the round physical button the iPhone sports now. Other improvements that the iPhone 5 is supposed to have include- a faster 1.2 GHz processor, more memory and a larger 3.7-inch display. Why are we excited? Its a goddamned new iPhone; I think its pretty much mandatory for tech journalists to get excited.

When its expected: Rumors put the launch date anywhere from January to December. We are more inclined to believe that the Apple iPhone 5 will show up in the second quarter during the summer months.

Samsung Galaxy S 2

The best Android smartphone in the market today will get a successor in 2011, if rumors are to be believed. The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is supposed to have a 2GHz dual-core processor and a Near Field Communications (NFC) chip that will make it possible to use your phone as a credit card. The Galaxy S 2 will probably run on Android 2.3 and will have a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED 2 display, 1GB of RAM, 4GB ROM, 32GB of internal support along with support for microSD cards up to 32GB, an 8MP camera that can record 720p videos and Bluetooth 3.0 support. By all accounts, the Galaxy S 2 looks like it will give netbooks a run for their money and we like that.

When its expected: Samsung is expected to reveal the Galaxy S 2 at the Mobile World Congress in February.

iPad 2 to have new speakers and a flat back

iPad 2 to have new speakers and a flat back
More rumors about the second generation of iPad flood the internet again. Earlier this month, there were rumors about iPad 2 having two cameras. Now, we have a few new rumors, coming straight from Japan, from the blog MacOtakara. The blog says that the rumors may not be true, but they surely are interesting.

The blog says that the frame or the case of the iPad will shave off 3mm to make it smaller. But the display will be of the same size. The overall dimension of the iPad will be reduced from 242.8mm to 239mm (height) and 189.7mm to 186mm (width). This will surely make a change, will feel kind of small. And another big thing is the rear part of the tablet. We have a bulge at the rear now. The new model is rumored to be flat at the rear. This will be really good.

Now, if the tablet is placed on a table and you try to use it, it wobbles each time you tab on the display. This is completely irritating. Probably, if this particular rumor is true, it will be very good if you are at your study/work table and work on the tablet with one hand and drink coffee with the other. No more wobbling.

The next, and which also would be a very welcome change is of new speakers on the iPad. There is an image showing this off, which is a rendering by Taiyo Fujii for MacOtakara. Ive added the picture below. This looks good now as the casing is also changed. Also, the speakers are said to me more loud and bigger than the previous models. We have to see the performance now.

We also saw in the previous rumor that the next version of the iPad will also have two cameras, one at the back and one at the front. The back camera may be the same camera which is on iPhone 4. The front facing camera, which can be used for video calling and taking self portraits, would probably with a VGA or a 1.3MP camera.

As these still remain rumors, there is another rumor that the second generation iPad is already in the production line and the shipping will start from next month. So Apple can surprise us in any way. Lets hope if not all, most of the rumors get true.

Dell Inspiron iM501R Laptop Review

Dell Inspiron iM501R Laptop
The Dell Inspiron iM501R laptop is one of the coolest laptops of the month. The configuration is good, and gives good performance as well. The price is proper, something like value for money. The configuration of the laptop is as follows.

Processor : AMD Phenom II Quad-Core Mobile processor
Memory : 4GB3 1,333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
Chipset : AMD M880G Chipset
Graphics Standard : ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
Operating System : Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
Display : 15.6" Widescreen HD glossy WLED display with TrueLife Panel (1,366x768)
Hard Disk : 500GB3, 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Speakers : SRS Premium Sound - 2 speakers @ 2W
Optical Drives : Internal 12.7" Tray-Load DVD+/-RW
Power : 2.2AHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Battery
Price at the time of review : $819.99

The laptop runs on an AMD processor. Ive been using an AMD laptop for like two years now, and an Intel desktop PC for almost the same time. Both are comparable when it comes to the processors they have, but I get a lot better performance from the laptop, which runs on an AMD chip. No offense Intel, but Ive lot interest in you. The PC tends to become sluggish after a time.

But there are drawbacks with AMD as well, first is the well known heating issue. The laptop gets heated up in no time, its true. I use a cooling pad under my laptop for the reason. But the performance you get is of no match. Anyway, the processor in this case is a Phenom II quad-core processor, which is a lot similar to Intels i5. Not at all a bad choice.

Coming to the memory, it has 4GB DDR3 installed, no issues here as well. Its a lot for anything you can possibly do. Also, the frequency of the memory is 1,333 MHz. With this comes the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 dedicated graphics card of up to 1GB. Seriously, if you are not a hard core gamer, this is some serious configuration for the price you are going to pay.

Its got a 500GB hard disk in it, so you can get all the stuff you need inside your laptop. If you are a movies or music buff, like me, then you can enjoy it with the beautiful 15.6 HD widescreen TrueLife display and the built in stereo speakers which produce 2W each and have premium SRS sound. Sweet, isnt it?

With this being the main area of interest, you have all the other usual ports and stuffs. You even have a 7-in-1 card reader. But one disappointing this is that the laptop has only one line out jack, that is the head phone jack. Most laptops started shipping with two of these and one mic in ports like years back. I dont know why this has only one line out port.

There are all the kinds of wireless connectivity options that are standard. You can have different color options and a bit change in the config as well, it depends on your needs. If you are satisfied with this, you can buy Dell Inspiron iM501R laptop now for $819.99 from The Tech Check Store. Other options of similar laptops are also given below.

Nokia BH-218 Review

Nokia BH-218
Nokia Corporation, is a Finnish based multinational communications corporation. The company is involved in manufacturing the mobile devices and also in converging the internet and the communications industries. It is also the largest manufacturer of the mobile phones in the entire world. The company also manufactures Bluetooth headsets and other accessories. The release of the companys N8 handset has hid all the other devices that are being let out by Nokia in the market. The BH-218 is one of the latest headsets released by Nokia. It has almost all of the necessary features. It carries the same features as the previous headset from Nokia, the BH-217.

Specifications

* Dimensions: 54 x 19 x 13.8 mm
* Weight: 13.8 grams
* Connectors: 2 mm charger connector interface
* Operating Range: 10 m (Bluetooth)
* Power supply: 70 mAh rechargeable lithium ion polymer battery
* Talk time: 8 hours (Bluetooth)
* Stand by time: 3 months when the earpiece is in the clip; 150 hours when it is not in the clip
* Charging time: 2 hours
* Features: DSP noise reduction, automatic volume adjustment, voice prompts
* Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR
* Package contents: BH-218 Bluetooth headset, Nokia charger AC-3, earplugs (S and L), user guide
* Price: $50

Design

The BH-218 headset has an unconventional design with a separate clip in order to make it have a clip on type of design. The headset possesses a single ear bud that is attached with a cable. Though the design is unusual, it is highly convenient and comfortable to use in most of the cases. The headset turns on and off automatically whenever the ear piece is taken away from the clip. This will definitely boost the battery life to a large extent. The design of the BH-218 is alone different from that of the BH-217. All the other features are the same. The clip of the headset is slim and minimalistic with an answer or end key alone. The company logo is also found on the clip. The cable that connects the ear bud is a controversial design element of the headset as it is found to dangle from the clip and it has to be hid to obtain a better fit after a call is over. There is a tiny plastic part with the mute switch and the microphone on the cable. The volume rocker would be a terrible lack in the beginning but it goes off after getting aware about the automatic volume adjustment. The ear bud offers a nice and comfortable fit just as the regular ear buds.

Features

The BH-218 headset is a always ready for use. It can be quickly turned on by picking up the ear piece. It automatically gets connects as soon as the ear piece is taken out of the clip. It has a stand by time of up to 3 months, provided the ear piece is stored on the clip itself. The users can benefit more from the headset as it produces excellent call quality with the built in DSP noise reduction feature. The microphone is also in built in the cable for the high voice quality. The headset has the Advanced Multipoint feature which allows the users to connect it to a maximum of two devices simultaneously. It is also equipped with the Adaptive volume adjustment which compensates for the lack of the volume rocker. The voice prompts are also present in the headset to provide guidance during the Bluetooth pairing process and in the indication of the battery and connection status.

Performance

The headset can be simply powered on by taking the ear bud off the clip. The headset flashes blue when it is ready for the pairing process. There are absolutely no issues in connecting the headset with an iPhone or with a Nokia handset. The multipoint feature is surely a benefit for the users who tend to use different handsets. The headset detects the handset that receives a call at first. The voice prompts that indicates the status of the battery and the connection is also quite useful. The headset supports the headset profile and the hands-free profile. The volume adjustment takes place quickly as well as accurately. The headset is highly good in performance when used in noisy environments. The call quality is clear and the callers can hear us clearly despite of the noise. The callers sound natural and cleat and they can hear us loud enough. The headset has a talk time of 8 hours and a charging time of 2 hours. The headset has a battery life that is quite on par with that claimed by the company.

Conclusion

The BH-218 is an inexpensive headset costing nearly around $50 when compared with the headset series of Nokia. It has some unconventional design aspects and it is quite easy to handle once the user is capable of managing the dangling cable. The headset offers excellent call quality and a comfortable fit. These two aspects are the main features that are expected out of a Bluetooth headset. Pros excellent call quality and unconventional design. Cons dangling cable and quiet sound output.

New LCD Displays from Acer

Acer teases the crowd with a couple more LCD displays - the 21.5" H223HQbmid and the 24" H243Hbmid. Both models have a different resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 compared to many other LCD monitors which feature 1,920 x 1,200 resolution instead. Well, at least they're able to be used as full HD displays for your entertainment needs - that's what is most important, right? Prices for the 21.5" H223HQbmid and the 24" H243Hbmid will stand at 250 and 330, respectively. Good thing Acer did not forget to throw in the HDMI port, or that would surely be a pity if it went missing.

Samsung HT-Z520 Home Theater System ReviewDecent Overall Value

Samsung HT-Z520 Home Theater System ReviewDecent Overall Value
Its thewell, daybefore Christmas, and considering it happens to sync up with a Friday this year, Im bidding you all a pleasant good weekend and a merry Christmas all at the same time. And before we close out a week of reviews, we bring you one last home theater system, the Samsung HT-Z520. Itll be a little nicer to your wallet, though not as nice to your ears.

The Samsung HT-Z520 is a 5.1 channel, twelve hundred watt home theater system with four satellite speakers, one center channel speaker, a subwoofer, and a five DVD changer. Youll also get an iPod dock, a USB port, HDMI input, wireless rear option for your rear speakers, AnyNet Plus capability, automatic upscaling for your DVDs, Energy Star compliance, FM tuner, Auto Sound Calibration systems and Smart Volume.

File this one under not bad. The sound is loud, but nothing spectacular. Theres a five DVD changer in here, which is always nice. And there are plenty of solid options, which is enough to put it, as I said, squarely in the not bad column. Theres nothing particularly great about this setup, but so too is there nothing particularly bad.

And considering that you can get this one for under two hundred bucks from a couple different places (Amazons got this for $194.95), the sheer value of it doesnt hurt.

Its not a great system, this Samsung HT-Z520, but it will do a fairly nice job especially if you dont need anything big and special, and youre looking to conserve some cash. Sometimes the bargain basement system is all you need, and if youre looking at one of those times, you should be looking at the Samsung HT-Z520.

You can get the CDJ-350 with a BEAT display to help the DJ see where a beat of a song is. It also has loop divide, beat loop, and a hot loop function. As for the DJM-350-W, it works as a DJ mixer for converting analog signals to digital, and it also includes noise, short echo, jet, and filter.

This is a packaged DJ system that costs $2445 and will be launched on January 2011.

Logitech halting Revue production until Google TV gets a revamp

Is it just me, or is Google TV in big trouble, or is it setting itself up for something even bigger?

Ive just heard that Gigabyte, the company who makes Revue units for Logitech, is not going to produce any of the units from December 2010 until January 2011. I believe that their demands is that Google TV update their software.

I should be hearing about this soon, and Ill get you a post on that one, for sure.

Monster is suing Fanny Wang over headphones

Monster is suing Fanny Wang over headphones
Some of you might be familiar with Monsters Beats headphones and the phones from Fanny Wang.

You might notice that these headphones by too different companies look a lot alike. Apparently, so has Monster, as they are filing suit against Fanny Wang.

New Acer Aspire TimelineX 4820T review

It's almost impossible to please everyone all of the time, but Acer's Aspire TimelineX 4820T wants to do just that. By fusing the light-footed panache and class-leading stamina of the previous Aspire Timeline range with the power of Intel's Core i5, Acer has sought to create a portable powerhouse for sensible money.

Take a good long, hard look at the Aspire TimelineX 4820T and you'd be liable to mistake it for a modestly equipped CULV laptop. It's certainly impressively dainty. At just 2.07kg and measuring a mere 25mm thick, the TimelineX is highly portable for a 14in laptop, and it looks good with it. Brushed aluminium sweeps all around, the stylish black lid softening into a silver and glossy black two-tone effect on the inside.

Neither the Acer's weight nor its size is liable to grab any headlines, but beneath its mild-mannered exterior there lies stunning potential. Where its predecessors all made do with Intel's low-voltage processors, and paid the performance price, the Aspire TimelineX 4820T does nothing of the sort.

A full-fat Intel Core i5-430M processor barrels along at 2.26GHz, Turbo Boost punching it up to 2.53GHz when the occasion demands it, and Acer has obviously been practising its sleight of hand, as it's managed to slip in dedicated ATI graphics too.

It certainly makes for stunning performance. Our application benchmarks were dispatched with an overall score of 1.56, but that isn't the end of its talents. Thanks to the ATI Radeon HD 5650 graphics chipset, this laptop is also a capable gaming machine.

We had to push our Crysis benchmark all the way up to 1,600 x 1,200 resolution and High quality settings before the frame rate dipped to an unplayable level. For such a lightweight laptop, it's immensely impressive.

What's astounding, then, is that Acer has managed to combine breakneck speed with deep reserves of stamina. Switch over to the Intel HD graphics embedded in the Core i5-430M processor - a case of clicking the right mouse button and selecting the menu option - and the Acer will idle for more than nine hours before the battery gives out.

Swap back to the more powerful ATI chipset and push the Acer to its limits, and you'll still get 1hr 42mins of use before the TimelineX comes limping back to the mains socket.

Acer Aspire One AOD 255-1203 Review

Acer Aspire One AOD 255-1203
Sometimes you have to wonder if Acer is even remotely concerned about profit margins, given how aggressively priced its laptops are. The Aspire One AOD255-1203 ($329.99 street), for instance, is the companys latest netbook, which sports Intels newest dual-core Atomthe N550 (1.5GHz). Among the handful that have already been launched with this processorthe Asus EeePC 1015PEM ($370 street, 4 stars) and HP Mini 5103 ($650 direct, 4 stars)the AOD255-1203 is undoubtedly the most inexpensive. But, you still get a full-size keyboard and over 7 hours of battery life.

Design
Less than an inch thick (10.2 by 7.5 by 0.8-inches), the AOD255 is Acers thinnest netbook available, and at 2.5 pounds, its the lightest too. Its color selection, though, boils down to taste, but Aquamarine blue is one of those colors that will either be swiped off the shelf or left there to rot. Thankfully, its available in other colors like Ruby Red, Sandstone, and Diamond Black. The maroon colored Asus 1015PEM, on the other hand, takes a more neutral approach to design. If fancy is what youre after, the HP 5103 uses aluminum in its lid design.

More

The AOD255s 10-inch wide screen with 1,024 by 600 resolution is a common feature found in most of the netbooks. Other netbooks, like the HP 5103 and Dell Inspiron Mini 10s (HD) ($425 direct, 3.5 stars), have options for a 1,366 by 768 resolution. Bigger netbooks, like the 12-inch Asus EeePC 1215N ($500 street, 4 stars), standardizes on a 1,366 by 768 resolution. In the 10-inch space, the AOD255-1203 is one of the three netbooks that squeeze in a full-size keyboard. Though it isnt as responsive as the keyboard found in the Toshiba Mini NB305-N410 ($400 direct, 4.5 stars), it still renders an exceptional typing experience. Acer has also widened the touchpad, so it is now as large as that of the Asus 1015PEM, and has tuned out the clacking noises that used to come from the mouse buttons.

Features
Its features arent jaw-dropping, and you wouldnt expect them to be traded at this price. The AOD255s 3 USB ports, Ethernet, Multimedia Card slot, and Webcam are average add-ons for a netbook in terms of hardware. These features are the same as the ones found in Toshiba NB305-N410 and Asus 1015PEM. Even the 250GB (5,400rpm) hard drive is a standard fare. Spending more money on a netbook will move you up in the features chain: The HP 5103, for instance, ships with a faster spinning drive (7,200rpm); the Dell Mini 10s has an HD decoder card, for a smoother high-definition video playback; and the Asus 1215N features an HDMI port.

Upgrading the standard 1GB memory configuration (which the AOD255 has) to 2GB is a common netbook performance tweak. Unfortunately, the AOD255 doesnt makes it easy to do. Youll have to remove at least 7 screws in order to access the memory slot. The Asus 1015PEMs memory slot, on other hand, is accessible by removing a single screw. Better yet, the HP 5103 has a tool-less panel: The latches that remove the battery also release the memory panel.

Performance
Since their inception, netbooks have used nothing but single-core processors, most of which are based on the Intel Atom platform. Only recently Intel did launch its mobile dual-core Atom, which is only available in a handful of netbooks. The AOD255 joins the Asus 1015PEM and HP 5103 in running on the Intel Atom N550 (1.5GHz). Before you get too excited, please note that performance improvements are only marginally higher than the single-core Atom N450 and N455 (1.67GHz). In SYSMark 2007 Preview tests, the AOD255 scored 42, which is about 10% better than the Toshiba NB305-N410 (38) and Dell Mini 10s (39). In Cinebench R11.5, its result of 0.48 was identical to that of the HP 5103 and Asus 1015PEM.

With little variation between components, the best battery scores are usually determined by the batterys capacity. At 49WH, the AOD255 has one of the smallest batteries in this group, yielding a MobileMark 2007 score of 7 hours 42 minutes. With their bigger batteries, the HP 5103 (66WH), Asus 1015PEM (63WH), and Toshiba NB305-N410 (61WH) broke the 8-hour mark. Still, over 7 hours of battery life is long enough for a coast-to-coast flight.

Theres a lot to like about a netbook that keeps getting better, while consistently lowering its price. The Acer Aspire One AOD255-1203 is the most inexpensive netbook to give you a dual-core Atom processor, a full-size keyboard, and over 7 hours of battery life. Despite its list of accolades, however, its not the best netbook. The Toshiba mini NB305-N410, our Editors Choice, gives you 9 hours of battery life and the best typing and navigating experience on a netbook

New Dell XPS L501x Review

New Dell XPS L501x Review
We've lamented the state of Windows laptops on numerous occasions; the formula is "tried and true", but that doesn't mean we like it. Put in reasonably fast components, give us sufficient memory and hard drive capacityand then match this with a cheap (usually glossy) plastic case and the least expensive (again, glossy) LCD panel you can find. Acer (and sub-company Gateway) has truly perfected the art, with a keyboard that all three of our laptop reviewers dislike/loathe/vilify, but they're certainly not the only culprit. ASUS, Toshiba, Dell, HP, and many others use variations of the same basic pattern, and what we're left with is a matter of finding out who if anyone can make something that truly stands out from the crowd.

Of course, if we're talking about standing out from the crowd, one name almost immediately comes to mind: Apple. Love 'em or hate 'em, Apple has definitely put more time and energy into creating a compelling mobile experience. It starts with building a high quality system, but it reaches beyond that into the core OS X experience. Whatever Apple is doing, the result is significantly better battery life under OS X for the components and battery capacityand as we've shown, moving to Windows 7 largely negates any battery life advantage.

HP created their Envy line to go after the same target market, only forget the OS X stuff and simply build a better consumer notebook that doesn't feel like a cheap piece of plastic. Now, Dell is throwing its hat into the ring with the return of their XPS line. Yes, you could argue that the Studio XPS went after the same market, but the chassis now comes with a magnesium-alloy frame and eschews glossy plastic; the result looks and feels better (in our opinion) than the old Studio XPS 16. Dell also ships Waves Audio Maxx and JBL certified speakers on all the new XPS models, with a claim that these are the best laptop speakers on the market. We'll try to put that claim to the test, but before we get to the evaluation here's the specifications on our test system.

Most of the specs are standard stuff, but a few areas stand out from the crowd. One clear advantage over competing laptops is the 1080p LCD, and it takes about two seconds after you first power on the laptop to determine that yes, we have a winner here! Throw in what is obviously a higher-than-500:1 contrast ratio and the 1080p resolution and we're sold. The high color gamut (~100% AdobeRGB 1998) means the picture looks oversaturated at times, but given the choice between a 45% gamut and a 100% gamut we'll take the latter. What's great is that the total price of the LCD upgrade is only $130, and considering the amount of time you spend staring at the display it's money well spent in our book!

The speakers are another item where the XPS is head and shoulders above the crowd. The subwoofer adds much-needed bass, and sound clarity in general is very good. The Waves Maxx Audio 3 might matter more for audio professionals that regular users, but Waves does give you quite a few options for tweaking the way your laptop sounds. You won't be replacing your home theater system with laptop speakers, obviously, but the L501x can get very loud and do so without severe distortion. Personally, these rate as the best laptop speakers I've used (which isn't saying much), but how important that is depends on the individual.

Similar to the Waves audio in terms of how much it will matter is the HD webcam, and this is apparently the first Skype HD certified laptop. With H.264 support, the webcam in theory allows you to chat with others and get a higher quality video, though the video you get still depends on the other user's camera. In practice, getting an HD video connection with Skype requires at least 512Kbps of bandwidth in both directions, and even when you have that it doesn't always work. The webcam does work fine otherwise, but we never did manage a high quality HD video conference, perhaps because of bandwidth limitations (even though we tested on a 12/1Mb connection).

As mentioned, this is our first encounter with a mainstream NVIDIA 400M part, and we're quite curious to see how the 420M compares to the previous generation parts. NVIDIA has given us an estimate of 30% faster, but that would probably mean 30% faster than the 320M, which would make the 420M around the same performance as GT 335Monly with DX11 support naturally. In other words, we don't expect to be blown away by the 420M, especially if we try to run games at the 1080p LCD resolution! 400M also means the HDMI port is version 1.4, and there's a mini DisplayPort connection as well. This isn't a gaming laptop, unlike some of the previous XPS designs, but it will handle "mainstream" gamingat a lower resolution than the 1080p panel. Thankfully, you can run at lower resolutions, and the panel is great in multimedia and general use even if 1080p requires quite a bit more GPU before it becomes reasonable.

Of the remaining features, only two final items are worthy of note. One is the backlit keyboard and the other is USB 3.0 portstwo of them. The keyboard isn't your typical chiclet option either; while it may not displace the ThinkPads for comfort, it works well. There's an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port as well, so while expansion options don't include ExpressCard and you miss the Firewire port (sorry Dustin!), everything else you'd expect on a good mainstream notebook is here. Other extras like a Blu-ray combo drive, Bluetooth 3.0, a 2-year warranty, faster CPUs, a GeForce GT 435M, and a larger hard drive (or an SSD) are also available if you're interested. We do have one complaint about the upgrades, however: you can only order the faster 435M GPU if you get a quad-core CPU, which means you lose Optimus support in the process. The CPU+GPU upgrade also bumps the power adapter up to a larger 130W unit in place of the normal 90W brick, which addresses a problem some users experienced with CPU/GPU throttling on the old Studio XPS 16.

Given the price, what we have is Dell's direct competitor to Apple's entry-level MacBook, and frankly there's no competition in performance or features. The MacBook only leads if you want one of two things: a smaller size, or the ability to run OS X (without going the Hackintosh route). The standard 6-cell battery provides good if not great battery life, while an upgraded 92Wh 9-cell battery should provide for all-day computing if you don't try watching videos or playing games. The specs of our slightly upgraded unit also compete very well against the ASUS N82Jvsimilar performance with a dramatically superior LCDas well as the HP Envy line. If you pick the L501x up on one Dell's routine sales (i.e. the current sale available on all but the entry-level unit) you can cut costs even more. With improved build quality and features, the new XPS L501x is a great update to the old Studio XPS 16; the name change doesn't really matter in our book, as we thought the old model was good regardless, but Dell has addressed all the areas where users had complaints and produced a very compelling midrange (mainstream) notebook offering.

The New HP Laptops are sleek in design and scheduled to hit the market in early 2010. The features on the computers are still very secretive although there is information that reveals there will be 14 new models. The HP Pavilion dv4i has a 14-inch screen with Windows 7 installed, and a fingerprint reader for less than $800. The 10-inch Mini 210 HD has the new Pine Trail platform with killer graphics for about $330 and comes in red, black, silver, and blue. There are other models, both less than and more than these, but all are worth taking a look.

HP Pavilion dm4-1165dx Review

HP Pavilion dm4-1165dx Review
If youre looking for a light laptop that doesnt sacrifice screen real-estate for a lighter load, then the 14-inch HP Pavilion dm4-1165dx ($779.99 list), a Best Buy laptop, might be what youre looking for. Combining a solid feature set with great battery life and good media performance, this mainstream laptop should rank high on your list.

Design
HP has started to integrate aluminum casing into their laptop design. The dm4-1165dxs aluminum casing stands out from other similar aluminum-clad systems, like the MacBook Pros ($1,199 direct, 4 stars), with its unique laser-etch design. The pattern flows on the exterior and palm rest of the dm4-1065dx, similar to the dm4-1173cl ($900 list, 4 stars). The dm4-1165dx also weighs the same as the dm4-1173cl at 4.3 pound, and is minutely lighter than the Asus U45Jc-A1 (4.7 pounds).

The keyboard is full-sized and in the chiclet style, each key an isolated square. The touchpad is an all-in-one, where the buttons are integrated. HPs touchpads have been known for their jumpy nature and this one is no different. I found that the one-click touch navigation method helped resolve the issue.

Features
The HP dm4-1065dx comes with all the standard connections: HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, two USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA/USB combo port, 5-in-1 media card reader, and headphone and mic jack. Theres also a dual-layer DVD drive. As an added security bonus HP also included a fingerprint reader. Like the Asus U45Jc-A1 ($867 street, 4.5 stars) and Lenovo IdeaPad Y460 ($1,049 direct, 4 stars), the dm4-1165dx comes with a nicely sized 500GB hard drive, but the dm4-1165dxs drive spins at a faster 7,200rpm.

The dm4-1065dx is fairly clear of bloatware, theres the designated eBay and HP Games shortcut, but other than that the trialware is minimal. Instead HP put up a designated dock with a link to the Download Store where customers can choose to purchase the software they want.

This system also goes beyond including your standard 802.11n Wi-Fi, with Intels WiMax and Wireless Display. WiMax allows you to have a 4G connection in any of the 54 cities that have erected WiMax-designated towers. Download speeds ranges from 2-5Mbps, allowing you to surf the web comfortably, provided you pay the $40 monthly fee. The Wireless Display or WiDi feature allows you to connect your laptop wirelessly to your HDTV, its like having an HDMI input without the cable. However, youll need to purchase the Netgear Push2TV ($100) receiver in order to complete the connection.

Its Dolby Advanced Audio pumped out the kind of audio you would expect from a laptop. The speakers are good enough for watching the occasional YouTube video, but anything beyond that youll want to put on headphones or get a set of external speakers.

Performance
The laptops 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-450M processor and 4GB of DDR3 RAM took the stage, allowing the dm4-1165dx to score well on our multimedia-oriented tests. It came out near the top on our Handbrake video encoding test, lagging only 3 seconds behind the HP dm4-1160us (2 minutes 52 seconds). It did well on our Photoshop CS5 test (5:11), beating out the Core i3-powered Asus U45Jc-A1 (5:46) and Core i5-equipped HP dm4-1160us (5:18). On our PCMark Vantage test (6,061) the dm4-1165dx again bested the Asus U45Jc-A1 (5,361), but lost out to the Lenovo Y460 (6,452).

Being that the dm4-1065dx has integrated Intel GMA HD graphics, its no surprise that it did not fare well on the 3D tests, like our 3DMark06, scoring 2,137 at 1,024 by 768 resolution and 1,908 at native resolution. It could barely eke out a score on out Lost Planet 2 DX9 test and couldnt even play our Crysis DX10 test.

For the mainstream laptop class, the dm4-1165dxs 6-cell, 55WH battery did well on out MobileMark 2007 test, scoring 6 hours 7 minutes. Comparably, it did better than the HP dm4-1173cl (5:48) and dm4-1160us (5:30), but fell short against the 9:27 score of the Asus U45Jc-A1.

Good battery life, a solid feature set, and good performance are staples the HP Pavilion dm-1165dx offer. Adding WiMax coupled with its light weight make it a solid choice for mobile users who dont want a smaller screen. As an everyday laptop, the dm4-1165dx is able to handle your everyday and multimedia tasks. If you want longer battery life and 3D graphics performance, for only $88 more, the Editors Choice Asus U45Jc-A1 is still your best bet.
